Flight case or waterproof case: what is the difference?

Anyone transporting valuable equipment, tools, or technical components wants to prevent damage. But which packaging is best: a robust flight case or a waterproof case? Both solutions protect the contents but are designed for different conditions. The right choice depends primarily on what you are transporting and the influences the contents must be protected against.

What is a flight case?

A flight case is a sturdy transport chest for professional and intensive use. The construction consists of strong sheet materials, aluminum profiles, sturdy metal corners, and integrated butterfly latches. This makes a flight case suitable for products that are frequently transported, loaded, and unloaded, or that must remain protected against impact and stress during transport.

Flight cases are used for audiovisual equipment, instruments, displays, tools, machinery, and industrial components, among other things. We produce them entirely to measure; nothing is standard. Consider special dimensions, stackable versions, various handles, wheels, and hinges (as shown in the photo above), or a layout that perfectly matches the product.

A flight case is an interesting option when customization is necessary and mechanical protection, durability, and heavy repeated use are central. However, a flight case is not waterproof. If you work outdoors often or transport equipment in wet or dusty conditions, it is important to also consider waterproof capabilities.

What is a waterproof case?

A waterproof case is a robust plastic case designed to protect sensitive contents against water, dust, and shocks. Calvo’s waterproof cases have an IP67 rating. This means the case is completely dust-tight and can withstand temporary immersion in water under the conditions of the standard.

This makes these cases suitable for measuring equipment, electronics, sensors, tools, and other valuable products that must remain protected even in challenging environments.

All waterproof cases feature user-friendly latches and a pressure relief valve, and versions with wheels or a telescopic handle are available. The valve helps equalize pressure differences, for example, when a case is transported in an aircraft or undergoes temperature changes.

Flight case or waterproof case: the main differences at a glance

The biggest difference lies in the protection the case is designed for. A flight case excels in sturdy construction for intensive transport and heavy, bulky products with unique dimensions. A waterproof case is the logical choice when protection against dust and water is a strict requirement and a product fits perfectly into one of the available dimensions.

The design also differs. Flight cases are often built specifically to size and can be made large, for example, with wheels and internal compartments. Our waterproof cases are produced in large batches and are available in various standard sizes. Both types of transport packaging can be fitted with interiors. This makes them convenient for packing equipment that needs to be carried compactly and securely.

Why a suitable foam interior is important

Whichever transport packaging you choose, the contents should not be able to move. A suitable foam interior with custom cutouts keeps every part in place, helps absorb shocks, and makes it immediately visible if a set is complete. This is practical for service and field staff, demonstrations, and logistical processes.

At Calvo, interiors can be tailored to the shape and dimensions of your products. In this way, the packaging becomes not just a protective exterior, but an organized and professional transport solution.

Flight case or waterproof case: which solution fits your application?

As a rule, choose a flight case when your products do not fit into one of the available waterproof cases. Waterproof cases are produced in large quantities and are therefore always more cost-effective than flight cases. For extremely heavy use, flight cases may be more suitable as they are stronger than waterproof cases. Choose a waterproof case when dust and water resistance are essential and you want to take equipment safely outdoors or into demanding work environments. If both intensive transport and waterproofing are important, please discuss the specific requirements with our specialists.
